- A Theme controls the overall look and function of your WordPress website. It is made up of stylesheets, scripts, images and templates. All these files work together to make up the Theme and help your website run. A Template is used to control a page or part of a page. A Theme might have a Template for the Header, Footer, Sidebar or comments section of a webpage. So Theme might include a Template that tells the website to display a companies contact information in the footer of every page in your website. The Theme would have a different Template telling it to put the website menu in the upper right hand corner of the header on every page.
